Sport
Yeah
Children at St Benedict’s lead very active lives. Not only do they have beautiful grounds to run about in and explore, but they enjoy many different sporting opportunities every week so that they are involved in physical activity for much more than the Government target of two hours per week for each child.
Sports coaches come into the school and give each class an hour of physical education weekly. Different sports are rotated each half term so that children are given the chance to take part in basketball, football, skills, athletics, agility, bat and ball games. Every other week years 3,4,5 and 6 go to the St Alban sports centre at Ampleforth College for half an hour of swimming and half an hour of activity in the sports hall. Children have also had the chance to take part in dance and gymnastics.
In addition, there are regular after-school sports fixtures, competitions and galas in football, netball, basketball, cross-country and swimming as well as the annual schools sports day.
Children say:
‘Sport is fun and there’s lots of teamwork.’ (Alfie)
‘I enjoy sport because there’s lots of space and you are not crammed in!’ (Rosie M.)
