Phonics
At St Benedict’s in Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 we follow the Phonics Play scheme. We have chosen this scheme because we feel that it best helps us support the children in:
Following the recommended pattern of: Review-Teach-Apply-Assess
The consistent, high quality teaching of Tricky Words (words that cannot be decoded).
Reading Scheme
Throughout Key Stage 1 the children will read books from three main schemes. Generally, the children in Year 1 will read books from the Read, Write Inc scheme. This is because we feel that the scheme links well with the teaching of phonics. The children in Year 2, as they are that little bit older and moving on from explicit phonic teaching towards studying general spelling patterns, will generally read books form the Oxford Reading Tree and Collins Big Cat schemes.
